Be nice

It’s alright I’ll ask someone else.”

I know you don’t know the answer. Your hesitation suggested it.”

Do they really have to be like that?”

Yeah I don’t know…”

“Sorry about that.”

“Thank you.”

When I was at Boots this morning, I heard a woman asking a staff member who was stocking the shelves, “Do you do…”

I was squatting in front of a shelf, picking out hair clips. Then I heard the staff member hesitate slightly, “Uh…”

Before she could say more, the woman cut her off: “It’s alright, I’ll ask someone else.”

The staff member didn’t even have a chance to respond before the woman walked away. The woman even turned back to add, “I know you don’t know the answer. Your hesitation suggested it.”

Though she said it with a smile, her tone and attitude made even me, just someone watching from the side, feel uncomfortable.

I turned to look at the young employee. She stared after the woman, with her face full of awkwardness and embarrassment.

As I walked past her, I quietly said, “Do they really have to be like that?”

She looked at me helplessly and replied, “Yeah, I don’t know…”

“Sorry about that,” I said, giving her a gentle pat on the shoulder.

“Thank you,” she said.

It was a moment that reminded me to always be a little more patient and understanding – especially toward young people who are working hard. This country bloody need it.
