As most of you might know, I was holding the Youth Mobility Scheme 2-year visa when I first came to the UK from Taiwan in 2015. Learnt and grew massively in many ways, the precious two years have become unforgettable to me.
Afterwards, just like a lot of you know as well, my UK journey didn’t stop. I came back for a master’s course in 2020. I obtained the Graduate Route visa in 2021. With my qualifications, I successfully applied for the Skilled Worker visa with my current employer Breitling / Breitling UK Ltd.’s sponsorship in 2023.
I appreciate everything taken me here. In the meantime, I’ve always wanted to encourage more young people who have the dream to live in the UK just like I do. Therefore, I’ve written quite many blog posts to share my experience and knowledge about living in the UK, which I believe has helped many people.
I was a teacher after all. With more and more experience gained, especially after I received the work visa, I feel I’m now more capable to tell and share my stories in the UK as a mentor with new YMS people every year. Hence I started the webinar called “Aurora’s Talk – the Starter Guide to Living in the UK”.
There are some sections in the webinar, including –
1. The visa application and preparation
2. Applying for NI, GP, bank account when first arrive in the UK
3. House and job hunting
4. Interview, job package and holiday entitlement
5. Income tax and insurance
6. Transport, shopping and travel
7. Cultural differences and English learning
The whole presentation took me two months to complete. With some reputation because of my blog, I’m grateful that there were 15 people attended my first webinar. By charging every attendant NT$200 (£5) each as an entry fee, I made little profit on this, which probably is not enough to cover the time and effort I’ve made for the whole project. But what made me delighted is realising that outside of my work, I CAN help people in this way to achieve my potential as a teacher/mentor/trainer/life coach…whichever suits this condition the best.
I’ve grown and gained a lot from what I experienced in the UK. I know how terrifying it can be for people to step outside of their comfort zone and try to survive in a different country. If any advice I provide can reassure people who just started life in the UK and thrive further, it’ll certainly be my pleasure, my personal/work skills developed, and one of my life goals achieved.
Here comes the second webinar I will hold soon. I’ll be pleased to keep journaling my progress and sharing it with you.
