versatile adj. 多用途的、萬用的、多才多藝的

首先讓我們來看看前幾天我和客人的這段對話：

Me: Hi madam. May I help you with anything?

Client: Hi. Yes, I wonder if you have Endurance Pro here?

Me: Unfortunately we don’t – Endurance Pro is a very popular current collection so it’s only available in our main boutiques. We only do out of collection, discontinued models here.

Client: Ah okay, I was actually wondering if you sell different colour straps for it. My husband has the bright orange colour one and I’ve been thinking to get him a black strap, so it (the watch) can be more versatile.

Me: I see. As an outlet boutique we’re actually sort of limited to sell anything else apart from watches. But you can definitely get the strap in any of our full-price stores. It’s quite easy to get it from our website too. Let me show you how to get the right one online…

是的，客人想要找的是我們家正價店錶款Endurance Pro的黑色橡膠錶帶，而她大致的訴求是「想買黑色錶帶讓有橘色Endurance Pro的先生替換，這樣就可以讓這款錶有更多搭配服裝和場合的可能」。

結束後，我突然有個很強烈的感覺，想把versatile這個字介紹給大家。無論大家在村裡的哪個品牌工作，這個字八九成會很實用！

根據劍橋字典，雖然versatile是CEFR語言分級架構裡的「C2」字彙，也就是近乎母語程度使用者才會用到的字，但其實在描述商品功能，譬如手錶換個錶帶就可以從正裝感變得運動休閒；本身有提把的包包若有揹帶搭配就能手提能肩背；或是一件素色打底上衣只要疊加不同外套就能創造不同風格⋯⋯等等，這些時候，我們都可以形容這些單品很versatile。

隨手google所謂的versatile items，就可以看到好多很生活化的內容，譬如衣櫃裡一定要有的幾樣基本單品(versatile clothing items)，廚房裡必備的食材或調味料(versatile ingredients/seasonings)，甚至一罐藥妝店常見的英國家庭常備乳液如Sudocrem、CeraVe、E45等等，因為有滋潤、止癢、舒緩功能等，都可以說是很versatile！

（在家裡客廳寫著這篇分享的當下，我抬眼就看到廚房流理台上的大同電鍋，忍不住覺得「哇塞，我們的電鍋簡直可以說是versatile的最佳代名詞！」）

雖然被分類在作為難度高的C2字彙，但這個字意外的又常見又生活化。趕快記起來，下次想形容某個物件很萬用時，就用得到囉！
